Our Story

It was in the late 1960’s that the trend of home décor was changing from the “Company House”  look of lino tile throughout the home with maybe an area carpet in the front room for a statement and trending towards wall-to-wall carpeting with new designs of wallpaper and new themes in paint. At the time it was only the lumber yards that carried these products and for them, it was only a sideline that did not offer many selections of floor coverings, in-home measuring, or installation of products.

It was in 1968 that several flooring companies approached two employees of the largest lumberyard in Fort St John (Eagle Lumber) who were familiar with their products and encouraged them to open a specialty floorings shop such as the ones that had been opened in Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie.

Taking this into consideration Rose Detonnancourt who was the accountant and Dennis Brooks the assistant manager of Eagle Lumber formed a company and opened the door of Rosebrook Flooring & Paints Ltd on October 15th, 1968 at the location of 10233 100 Street in Fort St John, (just off to the right of the picture above).  It was here that they offered the largest selection in Fort St John of products such as carpeting, sheet goods, wallpaper, and paint which was well received by the residents of the city and area to have a store offer specialty service and home décor. (The term home décor had not even been invented yet)

The store operated for 4 years and then moved to 9828 101 Avenue in 1972 where it is today.

The opening of Rosebrook was a relatively easy transition (although a tentative one at the time) since both Dennis and Rose were well known to the area as Rose had been in Fort St. John since the early 1940’s and Dennis had been there since 1963 and both were oriented to customer service and to the supply of quality products.

Which we are pleased to say has continued to this day

Our Staff

Stan Brooks

Fort St. John was again growing.  Stan moved from Edmonton in the late 1970s to help his brother Dennis with the demanding workload of a booming town.  Leaving behind his previous title of Operations Manager at Buckwold Western (today one of our largest suppliers), Stan brought a wealth of experience, along with a wife and 3 boys.  From the moment Stan arrived he dig in roots and put forth his time towards the community.  In the early ‘80s and still to this day he has worked with the Big Bam Ski Hill, and the Curling Club, and put in many years with local ball teams,  Over the years and even through tight times Rosebrook continued to grow, on the mid 90's Stan eventually bought out Dennis' Shares and became sole owner of the Company.

Shane Brooks

Shane started working in the warehouse and installing flooring in the mid-'90s.  After graduating high school and completing his Engineering Design studies in college he worked on multiple drafting and engineering JA Smith & Associates, and eventually returned to Fort St John to work for the Ministry of Highways.  In the winter of 1999, Shane started again working with Stan at  Rosebrook.   Over the course of the last 24 years, Shane has worked himself up from installations, repairs, managing the warehouse, and eventuality into sales.  In the last 17 years he has been the primary manager for Rosebrook, managing all aspects of operations, and in 2016 became the newest owner by purchasing this truly family-run business.   During the course of his years in the community Shane has donated to and been a proud member of the FSJ Petroleum Association, the Lakepoint Golf and Country Club, NP Rod and Gun Club.   He is a contributing member of the North Peace Shrine Club, and a proud supporter of the Northern Dance Theater Society, Minor Hockey, and many other community programs and events.
